The sciences of Shari'ah, or ‘Uloom ash-Shar’iyyah [العلوم الشرعية], are fundamental to a deep and comprehensive understanding of Islam. These sciences are broadly categorized into two main types:
Auxiliary Sciences [علوم الآلة] (‘Uloom al-Aalah) – These are essential tools that a student of knowledge must master to facilitate further learning. Without these, it is difficult to grasp the deeper aspects of Islamic studies.
Objective Sciences [علوم الغاية] (‘Uloom al-Ghaayah) – These focus on the core objectives and aims of Islamic learning, dealing with the essential teachings and beliefs of Islam.
Auxiliary Sciences
Auxiliary sciences include:
Arabic Grammar – The foundation for understanding Islamic texts.
Principles of Jurisprudence [أصول الفقه] – Rules for deriving Islamic laws.
Science of Hadith [مصطلح الحديث] – Principles for authenticating and understanding hadith.
Science of Qur'an [علوم القرآن] – Various disciplines related to the study of the Qur'an.
Objective Sciences
Objective sciences encompass:
‘Aqeedah – The study of Islamic creed and beliefs.
Fiqh – Islamic jurisprudence and the application of Shari'ah.
Tafseer – The exegesis and interpretation of the Qur'an.
Scholars emphasize that seeking knowledge follows a structured path, as indicated by the Verse:
… وَأْتُوا۟ ٱلْبُيُوتَ مِنْ أَبْوَٰبِهَا…
"…So enter houses through their proper doors…" (Al-Baqarah 2:189)
This Verse is often cited to emphasize the importance of approaching Islamic knowledge in the proper manner.
